Sweetgrass Baskets

Man Made Gallery

Sweetgrass Baskets
All over the Charleston, South Carolina area, you can find displays of sweetgrass baskets. The craft had origins in America, pre-Civil War, when slave women made baskets for use on the plantations. There are a number of standard designs but each basket weaver has some of her or his own unique styles as well. I'm told these are so durable and well-made that, with minimal care, they can be kept beautiful for generations.
