Traveling to Charleston, South Carolina early in April seemed like a good idea. The azaleas and camellias would be in full color about then. Unfortunately, we had not counted on the effects of our strange spring this year, with March seeming like April and vice versa. By the time we arrived, the best of the flowering spring plants had faded.

On a recent trip to Richmond, Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, we once again combined vacation with photography opportunities. Winter and early spring were cold, wet and dreary in Dayton and much of the Midwest, so the idea of getting out with a camera where sun was actually shining was not to be missed.

The Piatt Castles are two large homes east of West Liberty, Ohio, built around the time of the Civil War, that are open to the public and entertaining to visit.
